Transportation and Logistics: Guiding Successful Outcomes in High-Stakes Labor Negotiations
In today’s climate, robust scenario planning and transparent communication aren’t just best practices—they’re business imperatives when addressing labor disputes and union negotiations.

By the Numbers

What was the challenge?
The ripple effects of a single labor disagreement can disrupt supply chains, threaten reputations, and erode stakeholder trust in an instant. Amid historic labor negotiations with a major union, a mega-cap delivery and supply chain company faced the daunting task of equipping its leadership team with reliable scenario planning and communications strategies. The stakes were high: each scenario—from protracted negotiations to a possible strike or breakthrough agreement—demanded a proactive, well-coordinated response.
What was Sloane's role with other consultants in the labor dispute?
We developed preemptive communications materials for three distinct scenarios: ongoing negotiations, the risk of a strike, and the achievement of an agreement. The team launched targeted opinion campaigns among retirees and company advocates, while also monitoring and analyzing messaging across traditional, broadcast, trade, and social media platforms.
Upon reaching an agreement, a comprehensive communications plan was executed to share the positive outcome. This included supporting a customer win-back initiative, rolling out financial communications to highlight the benefits of the deal, and promoting thought leadership for executive stakeholders. Proactive announcements underscored the company’s progress on key issues and addressed ongoing concerns.
What were the results?
Preparedness for emerging issues during the negotiation process guided the company toward a successful collective bargaining agreement. The initiative led to a broad slate of positive media coverage, impactful broadcast activations, and key op-ed placements that reframed the employer brand and negotiation narrative.
